For all PocketPC Phone Edition users with GSM devices (PDA2K/XDA/MDA, etc.), here is a very simple tweak that significantly improves GPRS performance:

This tweaks simply selects Class 8 GPRS operation over the (default) Class 10 device setting. Class 8 operation assigns 4 of 5 channels for Receive (download) and 1 channel for Transmit (upload). In contrast, the default Class 10 operation assigns 3 Receive and 2 Transmit channels.

I recently upgraded my PDA2K to the new ROM build. Here's the new version info:

ROM version: 1.22.00 WWE
ROM date: 10/22/04
Radio version: 1.06.00
Protocol version 1337.38
ExtROM version: 1.22.162 WWE

Well, after a week of using my PDA2K with the upgraded ROM there is trouble in paradise. Prior to the upgrade, I never had to reset my device; now I have to perform a soft reset at least 2-or-3 times per day. It's so bad that I'm considering reverting back to the old build, but unfortunately I did not save it before flashing the device. I'll have to hunt down the prior build. Well, this is another example of the hazards life on the edge of mobile computing.

Well, I just successfully updated my PDA2K to the latest official ROM. I just couldn't wait to try it since there are a couple of niggling issues with the unit that I hope will be cleared up with the upgrade.
